The Return | O Platon

A powerful poem dedicated to road accidents and the memory of victims, inspired by the Tempi tragedy.

In the context of my personal project (school year 2020–2021), I chose to write a poem aiming to raise awareness among citizens and especially young people about a major social issue affecting modern society: road accidents.

The inspiration for expressing my concerns on this critical issue was the road accident that occurred in 2003 in the Tempi valley, which cost the lives of several students.

With the valuable guidance of my supervisor, Mr. Giorgos Apostolou, the following poem was created:

The Return

And her face was calm and sweet,
a green gaze full of flowers,
birds were singing, fragrances filled the air…

But how did it suddenly grow so wild?

Jealous of youth and their freshness,
it lured them close to take them away…

Who will comfort those mothers now?
Their hands were warm nests for their little birds.

Now the place is deserted…

Their screams fueled the flame,
on the asphalt their days remained…
(lost years, you might say)

Silence all around, fear reigns,
dreams lost in the valley of pain.

Who will comfort those mothers now?

Miles away, yet their souls heard the crash,
and keep looking toward the sky,
searching among the clouds, hoping to find him again.

“Come down, my son, bend down and embrace me…
did you forget your promise to always stay by my side?

My son, pain has suffocated me, thoughts torment me.

YOU, who hold life in your hands,
whenever you pass by there, remember:

bright eyes are watching you,
outstretched hands are waiting to lift you up,
innocent bodies are asking to return.”
