Open Day | 14th November
Inspired by the Forest School philosophy, which encourages children to learn through immersive, play-based experiences in nature, students at Platon School place sustainability at the heart of their learning. They explore how the environment and ecosystems function, understand the impact of human activity and adopt eco-conscious choices in their daily lives. Through individual and collaborative projects, learners develop a strong sense of responsibility and practical skills to act sustainably. As a certified Eco-School, we empower learners to lead environmental initiatives and projects that promote ecological awareness across the community, nurturing a generation ready to make a positive impact on the planet.
Scuba diving & seabed clean-up
Under the guidance of certified instructors, our IB Diploma students took their learning beneath the surface. They developed basic scuba-diving skills and took part in an underwater clean-up, removing waste from the seabed and contributing to marine conservation. They practiced safe diving techniques and reflected on their personal responsibility towards fragile marine ecosystems.
Beach clean-up at Latini Beach
Our Diploma and Early Years students joined forces to clean Latini Beach in Varkiza, collecting litter and raising awareness about marine pollution. Working in teams, they experienced first-hand how human behaviour affects coastal environments and discussed practical ways to reduce waste in everyday life.
Volunteer days on Mt Hymettus
Our IB Diploma Year 1 students supported the preservation of the Mt Hymettus Aesthetic Forest by pruning olive trees with the Philodassiki Society of Athens. They learned how even small branches can affect future growth and sunlight, used professional tools and worked outdoors.
Circular Fashion Initiative
Our IB Diploma students launched a project rooted in the circular economy, transforming discarded clothing and materials through upcycling. By giving products a second life and presenting them on Zero Waste Day, they showed how creativity can turn waste into social and environmental value.
Nurturing curiosity and responsibility, our students learn sustainability, nature and eco-friendly practices through hands-on, real-world experiences.
Our garden, in collaboration with Kiposcholeio, is a living classroom where students learn through hands-on enquiry and experimentation.
They grow plants and vegetables while exploring sustainability, environmental responsibility and scientific thinking, connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences that foster curiosity, creativity and respect for the natural world.
Students learn the full composting process as part of our Zero-waste Programme. Leftover food is offered to local stray animals while kitchen peels are transformed into compost in the Primary Years Programme Labs.
Through this, students experience recycling cycles, waste reduction and responsible community action in a meaningful way, understanding how small actions can have a lasting impact on the environment.
Our facilities are continually upgraded with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind. Solar water collectors heat the swimming pool with heat pump support when sunlight is limited and our 99.5 kW photovoltaic system powers the school.
Rated Energy Class A, the building features A++ air-conditioning and LED lighting throughout. Recycling programmes for paper and batteries further embed eco-conscious habits across the school.
Through the Forest School Programme within the Primary Years Programme Labs, students become researchers, exploring nature through observation and hands-on experiments.
They develop curiosity, problem-solving skills and a deeper connection with the natural world while learning to appreciate ecosystems, think critically and work collaboratively, turning outdoor exploration into a foundation for lifelong environmental awareness and scientific thinking.
Since 2023, our commitment to environmental education and sustainable school practices has been rigorously evaluated by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature. In 2026, our school earned official Eco-Schools certification, joining one of the largest global networks of sustainable schools.
This recognition strengthens our educational approach: empowering students to take an active role in environmental initiatives, turning learning into concrete action through real projects and community engagement.
The Nature Lab is a dynamic experiential environment rooted in Garden-Based Education and Forest School approaches. Through direct contact with nature, students observe, investigate and understand ecosystems, exploring how they function, how human activity affects them and how sustainable practices can be applied in everyday life.Through both individual and collaborative projects, they build environmental awareness, a sense of responsibility and the practical skills to act on it.
The Nature Lab curriculum is aligned with the PYP units of enquiry and Greek Environmental Studies. It focuses on themes such as urban biodiversity, responsible resource management and sustainable daily practices - including composting, water conservation and zero waste. At the heart of the programme is the Community Circle, a reflective space where students share ideas, exchange experiences and learn to express their thoughts while actively listening to others.
It's an outdoor learning experience that takes place in the schoolyard and in the forest near the school. Through gardening, observation, exploration and hands-on activities, students discover how natural ecosystems work and develop respect for the environment and sustainable living.
It develops environmental awareness, scientific thinking and problem-solving skills. At the same time, students strengthen their social skills, collaboration and sense of responsibility through group activities and shared projects.
Research shows that learning in natural environments improves children’s concentration, creativity, emotional well-being and their connection with the natural world.
